4flow participates in research project on real-time multimodal transportation optimization

ReMuNet project to boost resilience in European networks with optimization of routes, modes and utilization

4flow research will serve as an advisory partner in the research project ReMuNet (Resilient Multimodal Freight Transport Network), which began in July 2023 and will run until June 2026. Together with 22 research partners across Europe, 4flow aims to improve the resilience of European freight networks.

ReMuNet will create methods, algorithms and a collaborative platform to support synchro-modal relay transportation on European rail, road, and inland waterways. This model of transportation considers multiple modes and uses real-time optimization for each part of a shipping route using data about current conditions and other relevant factors, such as sustainability, time or cost.

To achieve this, the project will identify disruptive events in transportation and assess their impact on multimodal transportation corridors in real time. This information will be used to improve route utilization, suggest transshipment points and optimize capacity allocation.

As such, ReMuNet advances the development of the physical Internet across Europe – a concept for the future of logistics in which goods could be shipped more quickly using open-source transportation capacities, analogous to the near-instantaneous movement of data online.
